Explore the Canadian Rockies with luxe stays and relaxing experiences

Mention the Canadian Rockies in Alberta, and postcard-like images of Banff and Canmore often come to mind. But Kananaskis Country, in the eastern ranges of the Rockies, is a not-so-hidden gem that's making a name for itself. It's an outdoor playground for mountain enthusiasts, but K-Country (as the locals call it) can be daunting for the uninitiated with its slightly wild and rugged expanses of mountain wilderness.

But don't let any of this deter you if you aren't the most outdoorsy of people. There are still plenty of fun and easygoing ways to enjoy Kananaskis Country.

Treat yourself to a spa day

The luxurious Kananaskis Nordic Spa is the place to indulge and pamper yourself. You'll be surrounded by nature without having to immerse yourself in it, and the spa combines stunning mountain views with ultimate relaxation. The alpine sanctuary is a popular place, so you'll need to book ahead to snag a spot. Take a dip in the hydrotherapy pools, book a massage treatment, kick back in the steam cabins or curl up in a heated hammock. Just remember the spa mantra – hot, warm, cold, rest, repeat.

Enjoy a mountain getaway

You're in luck if you'd like to extend your spa day into a weekend getaway. The Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge is next door to the Kananaskis Nordic Spa, which can become your basecamp for nearby exploring or a mountain escape all on its own. The hotel provides cozy guest rooms and suites, a top-notch restaurant roster and nearby activities if you decide to venture out. Or sit back and relax on the outdoor patio around a crackling fire and take in the scenery – cocktail in hand.

Go on an easy "hike"

Time in the great outdoors of Kananaskis is well worth it, but you don't have to conquer a steep hike to find incredible views. Some of the most easily accessible hikes in Kananaskis are closer to a casual walk, and they offer a much-needed respite in nature without strenuous effort. You'll find the Troll Falls trailhead near the turnoff for Kananaskis Village, and the popular 3.4 km (2.1 mi) out-and-back trail is an easy trek with a picturesque waterfall waiting at the end.

A stop at Upper Kananaskis Lake provides an opportunity to stroll along the shore, too. Cool off in the water or pull up a spot to soak up some sun.

Sundance lodges

This one may sound outdoorsy, but it's a way to combine camping with some of the comforts of home. The trapper's tents at Sundance Lodges are cozy with just the right amount of rustic charm. They're equipped with a framed door, raised beds, a picnic table, a fire pit and even a heater. You can either bring your own camping supplies (dishes, blankets, chairs) or rent gear from the on-site Trading Post – you'll find fresh coffee there in the morning, along with basic groceries. There are some easy walking trails throughout the grounds, which lead to the nearby river and some fantastic photo ops. Wrap up the day making s'mores around a crackling campfire.

Unplug and escape at Mount Engadine Lodge, a mountain retreat that's equal parts rustic and luxurious.

Mount Engadine lodge

This is technically a backcountry lodge, but don't let that stop you. It's the only backcountry lodge in the area that's accessible by car, and the drive is unforgettable. Mount Engadine Lodge is a not-so-hidden gem of K-Country, and it's the ideal juxtaposition of Rocky Mountain beauty and a luxe retreat. Mount Engadine is all-inclusive, and the food is worth the trek alone – not to mention the view you'll soak up from anywhere on the property. Book a room in the rustic-chic main lodge, a private cabin (complete with a patio) or a try one of the glamping tents. Don't worry, they come fully furnished and have hardwood floors, a private patio and an ensuite washroom. Heads up: the lodge has no cellphone signal and limited Wi-Fi. Unplug and enjoy.
