Big Hill Springs Provincial Park

Big Hill Springs Provincial Park lives up to its name — it's a preserve for a large spring and a series of waterfalls. For the geologically curious, the spring originates from the sandstones of the underlying Paleocene-age Paskapoo Formation bedrock and from overlying preglacial sands and gravels. The water has a constant temperature of about 6C (43F), so the water flows continuously. Even in the depths of winter, when temperatures can get down to -40C (-40F), the waterfalls emerge over rocky terraces. In the summer, the terraces display lush growth of shrubs and grasses. Established in 1957, Big Hill Springs is one of the oldest provincial parks in Alberta. It’s the site of an historic fish hatchery and Alberta’s first commercial creamery.
