The name “Ma-Me-O” is derived from the Cree word for “pigeon.” And to get to Ma-Me-O Beach, you first must get to Pigeon Lake. That’s not difficult, as it’s 108 km (67 mi) southwest of Edmonton. It’s an easy drive and well worth the trip. Ma-Me-O Beach sits at the south end of the lake. The actual beach incorporates a day-use area and is well-known for its plentiful white sand, great swimming and playground. The beach is also a great spot to launch a canoe, kayak or sailboat. Pigeon Lake also accommodates powerboats. The Summer Village of Ma-Me-O Beach is a great place to stock up on snacks and picnic supplies if you decide to turn a quick dip into a leisurely day at the beach. Just be aware that dogs are not allowed on the beach. The area has campgrounds and private accommodations for those who want to extend their stay.
