When the temperature dips in Edmonton, the hearts of skaters beat just a little bit faster. That’s because they know that freezing temperatures herald the opening of the Rundle Park IceWay. The IceWay consists of almost 2 km (1 mi) of frozen splendour that lets skaters fly through the park that sits alongside the North Saskatchewan River in northeast Edmonton. The site also has a shinny pond for pickup hockey games, a large ice-skating surface and a smaller family rink. Rundle Park also has some good tobogganing hills. The skating goes from dawn to dusk. There’s plenty of free parking in the Family Centre parking lot or the lot at the ACT. Better still, the IceWay winds past picnic shelters and warming huts. Cold weather and beating hearts are fine, but chilly fingers and toes are another thing entirely.
