The World’s Largest Mallard Duck weighs one tonne and has a wingspan of 7 m (23 ft). At those dimensions, it’s no wonder the bird doesn’t migrate. Instead, the green-headed drake makes its year-round home in the village of Andrew, about 116 km (72 mi) northeast of Edmonton. The duck was built in 1992 to recognize nearby wetlands and lakes. These bodies of water dot the landscape and house large breeding populations of mallards and other waterfowl. Whitford Lake is a popular spot for birders hoping to spot mallards and rarer birds passing through during the spring and fall migrations. If you don’t want to venture into the wetlands, the World’s Largest Duck is easily spotted. It sits in the middle of Lions Club Park in the centre of the town.
