High on the north face of the regal Mount Edith Cavell flows a magnificent glacier, one of the most extraordinary sights in the Jasper area. This geographical marvel gets its name from its shape, which resembles outstretched ‘angel wings.’ The iconic glacier is slowly receding, melting into a breathtaking blue pond below. Angel Glacier will eventually disappear, making this a must-do in Jasper. For the most dramatic view, hike the family-friendly Path of Angel Glacier. It’s 1.6 km (1 mi) long and gains 87 metres (285 ft) of elevation. If you’re lucky, you’ll see icebergs in the pond and a few marmots along the way. Stay within marked boundaries, though. Ice calving off the glacier doesn’t happen often but can create massive, dangerous waves near the water. To reach the Path of the Angel Glacier trailhead, take Highway 93 south from Jasper for approximately 12 km (7 mi). Turn onto Mount Edith Cavell Road and continue for 15 km (9 mi) to the parking lot and trailhead.
