In the basement of St. Michael’s Long Term Care Centre in north Edmonton, the home of Baba’s Own Perogies, six Ukrainian babas churn out 300 to 450 dozen perogies a day. And the babas are as authentic as the perogies—they all learned the art of pinching perogies before immigrating to Canada. Each baba even has her own pinching style. The result is perogies with dough that is more delicate and fillings that are more flavourful than any commercial perogy. Baba’s Own also sells cabbage rolls, perishky (baked perogies) and nalysnyky (cheese crepes), all made by the babas. An added plus—all proceeds from Baba’s Own go back to helping out the seniors at St. Michael’s.
