Ride into history at Bar U Ranch National Historic Site. The ranch was founded in 1882, making it one of the oldest ranches in Alberta. Just 109 km (68 mi) south of Calgary, visitors can ride a wagon pulled by Percheron horses, try their hand at roping a steer or learn to repair a bridle. Guests are also free to wander the trails and dirt roads to see the cattle, saddle horses, chickens and other farm animals. Venture into the 100-year-old barns, slaughterhouse, post office and cookhouse to get a taste of traditional ranch life. The Stoney Nakoda encampment on the banks of Pekisko Creek provides opportunities to visit a tipi, hear traditional stories told by Indigenous interpreters and learn about the important contributions made by Indigenous Peoples to the ranching industry in Western Canada. Round out the day with a hearty meal at the Bar U Café or hunt for souvenirs at the gift shop.
