Bergen Rocks is a unique art experience in the central Alberta area, people may not be familiar with the concept of a sculpture park but it is well worth the time to stop in and have a look around. After participating in sculpture symposia in other countries, Bergen Artist Morton Burke felt that the events and the resulting artworks should be hosted here in Canada. Over a five-year period, he was unable to convince a community in Alberta to take up his idea so he just decided to go ahead and do it himself at his acreage in Bergen. He was quite sure that although the pomp and ceremony that is normal at these events in other countries would be absent, the grassroots nature of his concept would be interesting enough to attract sculptors from around the world. The result of these events is two international sculpture parks, one at Morton's acreage in Bergen and one in the Town of Olds. Monumental stone sculptures by artists from Vietnam, Germany, Thailand, India, China, Turkey, Korea, Mongolia, Iran, Ireland, Kenya, Cuba, Italy and Canada. The short drive to Bergen and Olds from the QE2 highway between Calgary and Edmonton is well worth the time to stop and see the artwork. Both venues are outdoors, so you can enjoy the fresh Alberta air while strolling among the artworks.
