During spring, summer and fall, direct descendants from the original herd of Great Plains bison live in their natural habitat near Waterton Lakes National Park. Take a drive on the Bison Paddock Loop Road to see them up-close. The paddock is located just inside the park boundary. It won't take long to see a landscape dotted with dozens of bison running free. The bison graze on nutritious rough fescue grasslands in a stunning valley beneath the Canadian Rockies. Roam with the herd, but stay inside the safety of your car — even when taking photos. Plains bison are majestic, but they can be unpredictable and dangerous. Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are prohibited on the Bison Paddock Loop Road. For a stunning view of the valley, take a short walk from the Bison Paddock Loop Road to the Overlook. You’ll get another view of the bison from high above the paddock.
