Buffalo Lake Provincial Recreation Area — or ""Boss Hill"", as the locals call it — is the height of summertime fun. You’ll find it 106 km (66 mi) northeast of Red Deer in central Alberta. There are three campgrounds at the lake, but Buffalo Lake Campground is the only one within the recreation area. It offers 28 unserviced sites suitable for RVs and tents. The campground has fire pits (firewood is sold onsite), a playground and picnic shelter. There's lake access, of course, so campers can spend their days swimming, paddling and playing on the beach. Buffalo Lake is also popular among waterskiers, windsurfers and anglers seeking out yellow perch, walleye and northern pike. Campers can also enjoy nature hikes down the shoreline or along the beach. Watch for owls, songbirds and deer in the surrounding forest.
