An alpine summer is generally brief. In Banff, the season tends to be brief and busy. That’s certainly true at Cascade Gardens, where gardeners take full advantage of the time from late June to early September. They plant hundreds of annuals to supplement the alpine perennials and bring forth a riot of colour. Cascade Gardens was completed in 1935 and features gardens terraced into the hillside. It sits beneath the Administration Building at the end of Banff Avenue. The garden is an oasis of calm amid downtown Banff and is a great place to sit and take in Cascade Mountain at the opposite end of town. Walking trails wind through the four-acre property and lead to water features, gazebos and pavilions where visitors can rest. Admission is free, and the park is a popular spot for picnics.
