This recreation area’s mix of woodlands and lakes attracts many species of birds. You might also spot wildlife such as moose, deer and beavers. It’s also pretty popular with human visitors. Two-legged creatures will find plenty to do in Chickakoo’s 480 acres of woodland. Summer offers birdwatching, hiking, biking and horseback riding along 14 km (9 mi) of trails. You aren’t allowed to swim in the lake, but it’s a popular spot for canoeing and kayaking. In the winter, trails are groomed for cross-country skiers who can also take advantage of a warm-up chalet to take the chill off their day. There are picnic tables and viewpoints along the trails, so pack a lunch. Chickakoo Lake Recreation Area is 47 km (29 mi) northwest of Edmonton, making it an easy day trip for those visiting the province’s capital city.
