Located on Lake Athabasca, Egg Island is the smallest ecological reserve in Alberta. It was established to protect a major breeding colony of Caspian terns, which are believed to have nested on this island since the early 1900s. With well over 100 nesting pairs, the Egg Island colony is the largest in the province. Large numbers of California gulls also nest here. No facilities on site, and overnight camping and open fires are prohibited. Please note that access is not permitted within 100 meters of the island during the bird breeding season, April 15 through August 15.
