Shipyards are few and far between on the Prairies. That fact makes the Fort McMurray Heritage Shipyard all the more intriguing. The shipyard stands as proof of Fort McMurray’s importance as a transportation hub. For decades it was a vital link in the supply chain. Every spring, trains loaded with wares pulled into town. The goods on the railcars were unloaded and transferred to ships that took them up the Athabasca River and delivered them to communities as far north as the Arctic. Heritage Shipyard celebrates and preserves this essential part of the region's past with historical vessels, two train cars and a collection of artifacts. Visitors should also check out the Jack (Torchy) Peden Centre, gift shop and Heritage Village, which has historical buildings. Heritage Shipyard is open from May to September.
