Home of the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame & Museum, it’s no surprise that the city of Red Deer has excellent sporting and recreation facilities. Great Chief Park, on the west side of the city just north of the Red Deer River, is Red Deer’s premier outdoor sports park. Named for 1800s Cree leader Chief Maskepetoon, the park features two baseball diamonds, two fastball diamonds, a regulation-sized sports field for football or soccer, a nine-hole pitch n’ putt course, horseshoe pits and support amenities like a media booth, dressing rooms and washrooms. Nearby is the Kiwanis Picnic Park, which has a playground. The site is connected to the Waskasoo Park system, a natural area considered the crown jewel of the city with more than 110 km (68 mi) of trails. Red Deer is midway between Alberta’s two major cities on Hwy 2, about 148 km (92 mi) north of Calgary and 155 km (96 mi) south of Edmonton.
