The Majorville Cairn and Medicine Wheel has a history that goes back over 4,500 years. That alone is impressive but only a visit to the site will give you a sense of its scale and importance. The cairn is 9 m (30 ft) across and is connected to the medicine wheel by 28 spokes. It was created by ancestors of the Blackfoot people and has been a sacred place for thousands of years. Blackfoot ceremonies in which offerings like sweetgrass, sage and tobacco were left at the cairn have left an impressive archeological record. Offerings are still left here today. The cairn and medicine wheel sits on a large hill overlooking an undisturbed prairie landscape. You’ll find it 50 km (30 mi) south of Gleichen in south-central Alberta. It sits on land leased to a cattle grazing company, but visitors are welcome at the site but must stay on the designated road.
