The term “mountain playground” could have been invented to describe Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. At 304 sq km (117 sq mi), it’s one of Alberta’s largest provincial parks, and it’s positively crammed with things to see and do. Peter Lougheed Provincial Park is in Kananaskis Country, about 135 km (85 mi) west of Calgary. The mountain scenery is spectacular year-round, and those peaks and valleys are filled with abundant recreational activities. In summer, there’s front-country and backcountry hiking and camping. Check out Rawson Lake, the Sarrail Ridge trail and the Blackshale Suspension Bridge. Trails for mountain biking and cycling keep your heart and legs pumping, while fishing from the shores of the Kananaskis Lakes is a great way to unwind — but you'll need a fishing license. In winter, the groomed trail system beckons cross-country skiers and snowshoers. Don't forget to purchase a Kananaskis Conservation Pass online or at the visitor centre.
