Wood Buffalo National Park in the province’s northwest corner is a vast terrain that beckons explorers. But if you’re pressed for time or not looking for a backcountry adventure, it’s possible to have a fascinating day in the park and get a taste of why it's been added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Head for the Salt Plains Day Use Area. If you're in the area, it’s an easy-to-get-to spot on a side road just off Highway 5. The site offers great views of the Salt Plains, which are the result of natural springs bringing ancient sea water to the surface where it then evaporates. The salt attracts tourists but also wildlife. The Day Use Area includes a power telescope to help you spot creatures and interpretive signs that explain the area’s natural history. Picnic tables and fire pits are also available, making this a great place for day trippers.
