You’ll find this charming spot in Lac La Biche. That’s not a typo. Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park sits on an island—the Big Island—in the lake. A causeway connects the Big Island to the shoreline, so it’s easy to get to the park and nearby campgrounds. It’s also easy to find, as it’s 5 km (3 mi) east of the hamlet of Lac La Biche on Highway 881. The provincial park offers sandy beaches and plenty of things to do. Rent a kayak, canoe or paddle board and head out on Lac La Biche. It’s an enormous lake, so there are plenty of things to explore, including other islands. The fishing is consistently excellent in this northern lake, too. The area is home to some 200 species of birds, making it a popular spot for birdwatching. Trails throughout the Old Growth Forest give hikers and cyclists access to the beach. Hikers will also appreciate the Boardwalk Trail, Long Point Trail and Old Growth Alley, which offer great views and plenty of fresh air.
