Trekkies will get the reference immediately. Those who have not “boldly gone” might need a little explanation. Vulcan was founded in 1913 by a CPR surveyor who named it after the Roman god of fire. That was all well and good until Star Trek debuted in the 1960s. The sci-fi TV series featured Mr. Spock, a crew member who hailed from the planet Vulcan. Eventually, in an effort to boost tourism, the townspeople of Vulcan looked to the skies. The town hosted its first Star Trek convention in the early ’90s. Vul-Con has been running for more than 30 years—generally over a weekend in July. In 1995, the town unveiled a replica of the USS Enterprise. Three years later, the Vulcan Trek Station, with its space-age vibe, opened. The Trek Station handles all the normal functions of a visitor centre, but also houses a Star Trek museum, an interactive costume display and a gift shop aimed at Trekkies.
