Canada’s largest national park occupies the northeast corner of the province. Wood Buffalo National Park is a vast wilderness of grasslands, boreal forests and crystal salt flats. Its size is not the only thing that sets it apart. The park is home to the largest herds of wood bison in the world, whooping crane habitat and fantastic karst and caves. It also contains North America’s largest freshwater delta, the world’s largest Dark Sky Preserve and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To say that there’s plenty to do in Wood Buffalo is a bit of an understatement. Pine Lake offers swimming, paddling and a day-use area with a playground, change rooms and a cooking shelter. A campground in the area is a good place to spend an evening or two. There are also biking and hiking trails throughout the park. In winter, visitors enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
