It’s safe to say that you’ll fall hook, line and sinker for the World’s Largest Fishing Lure. The lure is eye-catching if not actually fish-catching. The Guinness Book of World Records-certified attraction sits just off Highway 2A in Lacombe in central Alberta. To be more specific, the lure sits besides Len Thompson Pond at the end of Len Thompson Drive. This raises the obvious question of who was Len Thompson? He was a soldier in the First World War who set out to perfect spoon lures upon his return from Europe. His company flourished—first in Saskatchewan and, after 1958, in Lacombe. The World’s Largest Fishing Lure is 13 m (42 ft) long, including the hook. It is a greatly enlarged replica of one of Thompson’s most popular lures, the 5 of Diamonds. Once you visit the lure, you might want to head for nearby Blindman Brewing and order a 5 of Diamonds Pilsner.
