The World’s Largest Sausage is a must-see destination. Fortunately, at 12.8 m (42 ft), it’s also a can’t-miss prospect. The sausage sits in the town of Mundare, which is 84 km (26 mi) east of Edmonton. Mundare is a farming community that dates to the 1890s. Early in its history, many farmers from Eastern Europe settled in the area. Those settlers, many from Ukraine, brought their cultural traditions with them. This is where the sausage, or kielbasa, comes in. Mundare Sausage is a highly seasoned garlic sausage. The Stawnichy family has been making it since 1959, selling it first from a small store on the family farm. Today, Stawnichy’s Ukrainian Sausage is run by the third generation of the family. It makes a wide range of Ukrainian foods, but the sausage recipe hasn’t changed since the early days. It’s wildly popular in the region. Stawnichy’s estimates that it has smoked 20 million sausages since its inception.
