The largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies, Maligne Lake is 22 km (13 mi) long. It’s an eye-catching stretch of serenity that sits at the foot of Coronet Glacier. While the glacier water makes swimming an activity only for the hardiest of visitors, there are plenty of activities to keep you busy on the lake and in the Maligne Valley. You can take a boat tour to Spirit Island, one of the most photogenic spots in Jasper National Park. Canoe rentals are also available. Hikers can follow the trails up Bald Hill and Opal Hill for a little exercise and impressive views. Three campsites on the lakeshore are popular with paddlers and anglers. Hikers will find trails that loop around the nearby hills. Backcountry campers who are particularly ambitious—and well-prepared—can hit the Skyline Trail, which starts at Maligne Lake and finishes 44 km (26 mi) later near the town of Jasper.
