Get to know a wintertime hidden gem in the Canadian Rockies

Wateron Lakes National Park may be the smallest national park in the Canadian Rockies—but, as the saying goes, good things come in small packages. In fact, few corners of Alberta pack a bigger punch per square kilometre than Waterton, with a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an international peace park, a dark sky preserve and a biosphere reserve all in one place.

Waterton's reputation during the summer months speaks for itself. But Waterton Lakes National Park in wintertime is a true hidden gem. Here's how to make the most of a weekend getaway there.

Hit the trails

Located in the very southwest corner of the province, Waterton Lakes National Park is about 259 km (161 mi) from Calgary, so hop in the car early and head south on Highway 2. The park borders Glacier National Park in Montana, and together the two parks have been declared biosphere reserves, as well as a joint UNESCO World Heritage Site. So, you know you're in for something special.

Stretch your legs when you arrive by taking a walk around the hamlet and really soak in your surroundings. Many of Waterton's regular businesses close for the winter, including the gas stations and grocery stores, so make sure to show up with some snacks and a full tank. But don't be deterred: with no tourists around, the entire town becomes a bastion of quiet and calm. You're as likely to come across deer or bighorn sheep on the street as you are another person.

Once you're acquainted with Waterton at ground level, it's time to get an aerial view. The area's most famous hike is the Bear's Hump, which brings you to one of its best lookout spots—plus, it's one of the few times you'll have the trail almost all to yourself. Other popular options are Blakiston Falls, a gorgeous waterfall near Red Rock Canyon, and Cameron Lake. Tamarack Adventures and Uplift Adventures offer guided trips if you want some orientation; otherwise, get out there and see where the path leads you.

The storied Prince of Wales Hotel is also closed for the winter, but Waterton proper has no shortage of options for travellers looking for a cozy place to stay. Waterton Glacier Suites is a year-round vacationer's dream, with gorgeous mountain views, a fireplace in every suite and a variety of winter getaway packages offered in conjunction with local outdoor operators. Fill up on Italian food that's as fresh as it delicious from Red Rock Trattoria and recharge for tomorrow's adventures.

Shred the slopes or explore by snowshoe

Rise and shine for another day of exploration. Get your steps in at some of the many snowshoeing and cross-country skiing spots in the park. The Wishbone Trail is an easy-to-moderate course that passes through the forest to Vimy Ridge and back, with the option to turn back a little earlier at Sofa Creek. More experienced skiiers and snowshoers will love the Akamina Pass, a 14-km (8.7-mi) trail that takes you all the way to the British Columbia border and back. Be advised, most of these trails are classified as backcountry. Arrive prepared and be aware of trail conditions and avalanche ratings.
