Get to know a wintertime hidden gem in the Canadian Rockies
Wateron Lakes National Park may be the smallest national park in the Canadian Rockies—but, as the saying goes, good things come in small packages. In fact, few corners of Alberta pack a bigger punch per square kilometre than Waterton, with a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an international peace park, a dark sky preserve and a biosphere reserve all in one place.
Waterton's reputation during the summer months speaks for itself. But Waterton Lakes National Park in wintertime is a true hidden gem. Here's how to make the most of a weekend getaway there.
Hit the trails
Located in the very southwest corner of the province, Waterton Lakes National Park is about 259 km (161 mi) from Calgary, so hop in the car early and head south on Highway 2. The park borders Glacier National Park in Montana, and together the two parks have been declared biosphere reserves, as well as a joint UNESCO World Heritage Site. So, you know you're in for something special.
Stretch your legs when you arrive by taking a walk around the hamlet and really soak in your surroundings. Many of Waterton's regular businesses close for the winter, including the gas stations and grocery stores, so make sure to show up with some snacks and a full tank. But don't be deterred: with no tourists around, the entire town becomes a bastion of quiet and calm. You're as likely to come across deer or bighorn sheep on the street as you are another person.
