Try These Five Winter Weekend Getaways in Alberta

There's nothing quite like a little getaway after a long week. Luckily, Alberta is full of choices for weekend road trips. Here's six ideas for a winter weekend road trip in Alberta. Warning: You may want to stay even longer.

Kananaskis Village

Kananaskis Country is a stunning destination no matter the season. A blanket of snow on the mountaintops creates an extra-breathtaking scene. K-Country (as local's know it) is where you can find a winning combo of relaxation and outdoor fun. Treat yourself to a stay at the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge, situated in Kananaskis Village. It's an ideal home base to unwind after a day of activity.

The lodge just happens to be beside the  Kananaskis Nordic Spa. Indulge in luxurious treatments and soak your cares away in the hydrotherapy pools encircled by snow-capped mountains. Remember to book your spa time in advance.

If you want to explore the great outdoors while you're in K-Country, the Pomeroy is nearby Troll Falls. The popular hike is only a 3.4 km (2.1 mi) round trip. It's an easy option for families or those looking for a leisurely hike. A beautiful frozen waterfall awaits at the end, too. Or visit  Kananaskis Outfitters in Kananaskis Village for fat biking tours, cross-country ski lessons or stargazing tours. There's also a groomed outdoor rink in the village, and skate rentals are available if you don't have your own.

Mount Engadine Lodge

This hidden gem in Spray Valley Provincial Park overlooks a lush alpine meadow surrounded by soaring mountain peaks and thick forests. And it's not uncommon to spot wildlife in the area at any time of year.

Stay in one of the cozy lodge rooms or one of the private cabins and soak up the views. If you're feeling adventurous, Mount Engadine Lodge even offers glamping tents and a yurt. The lodge is all-inclusive, so you'll be treated to gourmet meals during your stay. The afternoon charcuterie is not to be missed, either. Gather around the fire in the main lodge or get out and explore the area. Guests can rent snowshoes and fat bikes from the lodge, and there's endless hiking and cross-country ski trails in the area. Remember to bring your own skis or rent them in Canmore before arriving at the lodge.

Thanksgiving Ranch

Looking to unplug and escape to the country for the weekend? If so, take this as your cue to visit  Thanksgiving Ranch, nestled in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies near Pincher Creek. The inviting main lodge is a welcoming space for guests, and the homey suites are a cozy retreat for couples, families or even a solo getaway. On the grounds, more than 3,000 acres of stunning scenery is waiting to be explored. Marked trails guide you by foot or snowshoes, or you could take some fat bikes out for a spin.

If you want to venture farther, you're in luck. Thanksgiving Ranch is only a 30 minute drive from  Waterton Lakes National Park. And it's an hour to  Castle Mountain Resort, where you can hit the slopes for downhill skiing and snowboarding.

Edmonton

Among other monikers, including Canada's Festival City, Alberta's capital is known as a winter city. It's a fantastic time to visit Edmonton, which offers a blend of urban and outdoor experiences within the city limits. The North Saskatchewan River Valley is exceptionally gorgeous during the frosty months. You can explore its winding trails on foot, fat bike or even a Segway tour with River Valley Adventure Co. Winter patios are also a favourite pastime in Edmonton, with restaurants making them nice and cozy. Try Boxer in Old Strathcona, Little Brick Café, situated just steps away from Riverdale Park.

If you're up for a road trip from the city, head out to Elk Island National Park. It's about 50 km (31 mi) from downtown Edmonton and a designated dark sky preserve. You'll have an opportunity to spot bison roaming, with your best chances found driving along the Bison Loop Trail. Crunch through the snow by renting snowshoes or see the magic of the night sky on a snowshoe and stargazing adventure.

Calgary

Alberta's largest city is an urban winter wonderland, too. Visit the site of the 1988 Winter Olympics at WinSport Canada Olympic Park to hit the slopes or tube park. WinSport also boasts some of Calgary's best views, with the downtown skyline to the east and the Canadian Rockies to the west.

Speaking of the Olympics, renting skates and doing some laps around Olympic Plaza is a must. The outdoor rink is situated in the heart of downtown, within steps of some of the city's best restaurants and shopping. Make a day of it and stroll down the avenue after your skate, warm drink in hand. Bowness Park is another popular skating spot in town. It's even better for an evening skate when it's lit up with twinkling lights and crackling fires to warm up around.
